Idaho’s winters are some of the coldest and snowiest in the country, and that can mean danger on the road. Icy streets and highways contribute to car accidents, but these accidents are often preventable. Safe driving practices are useful at all times of the year — winter included. Winter driving safety involves many simple but very important steps. At Hansen Injury Law, we dedicate much of our practice to helping car accident victims. Because of this, we know how easily car accidents can severely injure people and permanently alter their lives. By taking these important steps when driving in the snow and ice, we can prevent these types of accidents.

Tips for Winter Driving Safety

Driving safely in snow and ice takes more than mere caution. There are many things you can do before and during your trip to avoid crashes.

  • Before You Drive

Preparation is a key to safety in many situations. Winter driving is no exception. Before you drive, make sure your car is ready for the trip. Clear any ice from its windshields and windows. Make sure your tires are not worn down, which will increase your chances of sliding or getting stuck.

It is also important to stock your car with important tools in case of an emergency. Make sure you have jumper cables and an ice scraper, in case your engine dies or your windows are iced over. Some other important things to have in your car include: blankets, a shovel, snacks and water, and even roadside flares in case you run off the road and need help.

  • During Your Drive

Always wear your seat belt, in any conditions. The chances of sudden stops or changes in direction increase in the snow, so proper restraint is key. Another very important thing to keep in mind is your following distance. Drive at a cautious speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop if the car in front of you brakes or slides.

Many safe driving practices are the same during the winter as at other times of the year. Never drink and drive, and do your best to practice defensive driving techniques.
